USMLE Step 1 Score Estimation

Just 45 days left for the exam, and I find myself worrying about how I'm faring on the USMLE World qBank. So I checked all over the internet trying to find a good corelation between the pre-exam preparatory tools and the actual 2 or 3 digit score you end up getting in Step 1. Here are some of the ones I thought I'd mention:

  • For those who subscribed to USMLE World qBank, finish ALL 2036 questions first. Then, using your 'Overall correct' percentage:
Estimated Step 1 score (3-digit) = (UW %age x 2.4) + 84

  • For those who use the Kaplan qBank, attempted the free practice test on the USMLE website, NBME self assessment tests or the MCAT, use your obtained scores here for a decent estimate of your predicted Step 1 score. Do submit your Step 1 scores on this site so that the predictor gets more data for extrapolation, so that others can benefit.
  • LATEST: This predictor which I came across seems to be integrating your NBME scores, UW Self Assessment form score, UW qBank percentage, Kaplan qBank percentage and Clinical Review qBank percentage! This is the first predictor which I've seen using UW qBank as a parameter, so do check it out. Don't miss the corelation between your scores and percentile at the bottom of the page. That shows approximately where you stand after you've received your score.
Well, these are just to assure yourself that you're not going off the rails on a crazy train! The rest is up to fact that you put your heart and soul into your preparation! So I'm not going to be a preacher or a fool...

Let's go!

  2. From what I could make out from your comment.. you're asking how many questions should one do in a day.

    I'd say 2 sets minimum. That's around 96 questions (I think).

I personally liked to use tutor mode and go subject/topic-wise, since I could read the explanations of confusing topics as soon as I made a mistake. That way, hopefully I would not repeat the same mistake in that set. Having said that, I've heard most people prefer to do it timed and mixed, as it gives you format more like the actual exam. Personally, UW was way too complex for me to risk such an insult to my ego, so I went with tutor mode. To each his own. Choose the option which best suits your style of studying.. :)

  3. heyllo.. nice blog!
i'm doing uworld these days..mostly in tutor mode..as a learning tool.
the thing is i can't do more than abt 50qs per day...coz i land up writing a lot of explantions (..or just staring into nothingness a lot of times!!)
is that okay..?? [your 96qs/day kinda freaked me out... hence this comment!!]
sorry to make you seem like an agony aunt there.
    :D

    Cheers and Good Luck!

  4. @Arps

    I'm glad you liked it!

Regarding the 2 sets per day thing I suggested, well I would do 2 sets on days when I did NOTHING else. And of course that won't be possible everyday. I guess the best thing to do would be to get a 2 month subscription to UW and go according to the pace which suits your style of studying. Staring into nothingness sounds quite like the way I went about it on certain days.. Which didn't help since I just had a 30 day subscription! :D

UW is taxing on the brain so I'd suggest you do it the best way YOU can. Its unlikely that someone's else studying style matches yours exactly. But most of all, study hard! :)
