Feeling Patriotic? Song on Des Raag!

I think may have sounded too whiny in my last post. So as a mood elevator, I bring to you this gem of a song by Sonu Nigam (or Niigaam or Nigum or whatever-else-his-astrologer-wanted-him-to-call-himself). Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Sonu Nigam, just not the case with astrologers..

The song is based on Des Raag, which, for the unacquainted, has been used in many popular patriotic songs, the most popular one being the one aired on Doordarshan many years ago.

Baje sargam har taraf se..
Goonje bankar des raag!

Not to be confused with an equally popular DD song, Mile Sur Mera Tumhara. Well, I have very little clue about the intricacies of Hindustani classical, but most of these songs mention the raag within the song itself! ;)

Sonu Nigam has attempted a fusion between good old fashioned jazz with Hindustani classical, making the song sound really interesting, albeit sort of noisy at times. Coupled with killer vocals, this song is a must for everyone to hear. Even if you don't know shit about classical music, the song is so melodious that you'll find yourself humming the tune later in the day.

This is Sonu Nigam with Soona Soona, from the album Classically Mild. Enjoy!
